Learn about the geological evolution of Crete, the origin of tectonic faults, the creation of gorges, high plateaus, caves and chasms…

Several programs available lasting one day or more. Indeed, some hikes can be linked together and form in this way a multi-day trek, with bivouac in nature (tents).

1. Aravanes hike

Hiking to Aravanes | Climbing Klastris peak
One-day hike

Aravanes is a typical mountainous area of Psiloritis, endowed with all those elements that fascinate the visitor of a Geopark: diverse limestone relief – sometimes green with dense clumps of kermes-oak trees, sometimes bare marked by deep erosion – small plateaus, poljes, caves, and chasms.

It is located on the northwestern slopes of Psiloritis, at an altitude of 1020m, at the foot of the peaks Klastris (1369m) and Mygia (1567m).

Aravanes is full of pastoral life, since the existence of water sources and rich grass favor livestock.

The tour at a glance

The best hike we suggest for exploring Aravanes is a circular hiking tour from the chapel of Saint George, near the spring of Aravanovryssi.

It crosses first the kermes-oak wood of Aravanes eastward, it leads then to the imposing and rocky Klastris peak, and reaches at the end the fertile polje of Saint Constantine.

The return route follows the green and shady Arapis stream, along the northern foothills of the Mygia peak.

2. “Panakrea ori” hike

Hiking to “Vistagiano aori” and the Platania gorge
One-day hike

Panakraia Ori is the ancient Greek name of the western slopes of Psiloritis. The name comes from the ancient god Pan, pastor of wildlife, forests and shepherds. That is, all these elements that compose the landscape to the west of the Psiloritis Geopark even today.

The hiking approach of this area between the village of Vistagi, the mountainous area of “Tsikala wells” and the gorge of Platanias, reveals some of the most beautiful and wild landscapes of the Psiloritis Geopark.

Although difficult, the route fascinates the skilled hiker who has to walk on steep stony slopes and descend on safe abrupt paths, along impressive cliffs.

The tour at a glance

The hike being almost circular, the path starts from the village of Vistagi (450m), and passing through impressive rock pillards ends at the shelter of Vistagi, opposite the peak Mygia. The view to the valley of Amari is wonderful, while geological elements and shepherds’ constructios enrich in a unique way this hiking experience.

The continuation of the hike will bring you to the mountainous area of the “Tsikala wells”, while shortly after you will cross the impressive gorge of Platania in order to reach the village of Platania where is the end of the hike.

3. Korakia peak hike

Hiking to Korakia peak and the Aplytra area
One-day hike

Dominant elements in this very interesting but difficult hike are the wild and rocky mountain landscape, the rich and varied vegetation, the numerous karst phenomena (precipices, caves, water sources at high altitude, steep cliffs and poljes), as well as the intense pastoral life.

The area of Korakia is located on the southwestern slopes of Mount Psiloritis, just above the village of Fourfouras. It is distinguished from afar due to the wild rocky terrain and the dark-grey dolomitic rocks.

The tour at a glance

The hike of Korakia (alt. 454m) follows a circular route that begins and ends in the village of Fourfouras.

The uphill part of the route initially follows a wonderful path that leads to the water spring of Ochra and the area of Chelidone. Immediately after it becomes much steeper and passing near the chasm of “Loumatare” and the cave of “Habathoura”, it finally ends at the panoramic peak of Korakia (alt. 1479m) and the cave of Leska.

Passing then through the wooded area of ”Tsichli Poros” and thee “Aplytra” water spring – with the wonderful view to the southern coast of Crete and the valley of Amari – descends sharply to Fourfouras.

4. Kalikas plateau hike

Hiking to Kalikas plateau and the Papoura peak
One-day hike

The area of the Kalikas plateau is one of the little known in Crete, despite its special geological and ecological interest. This is a very beautiful wooded area of the Geopark, between the Pardi water spring, the Kalikas plateau and the Papoura peak.

As in the previous hiking proposals, the predominant elements along this new hiking discovery are the rough terrain, the impressive effects of erosion (caves, precipices, plateaus, large dolines, gorges … ) and of course the rich pastoral life like everywhere on the slopes of Psiloritis.

The hiking area is located at the southwestern foot of Psiloritis, above the villages of Kouroutes and Nithavri. We approach it by vehicle through intersecting dirt roads that start from the south (Platanos) or the west (Nithavri, Kouroutes).

The tour at a glance

The hike starts from the area of the water spring of Pardi (986m), and following livestock paths and mountainous dirt roads through the wood, leads first to the fertile plateau of Kalikas (cultivated with mountain fruit trees and vineyards) and then to the top of Papoura (1137m).
The view from Papoura to the south coast of Crete is amazing.

Highlights of the tour are definitely the cave of “Notiki Trypa” (or cave of “Paul Faure”) in the plateau of Kalikas, and the huge dolines that take your breath away, resulting from the tectonic processes and erosion that characterize the abrupt slopes above Nithavri.
